Dishwasher History: A Timeline of an Appliance Favorite

With the advent of electricity and a decline in household servants helping in the kitchen, appliances began to gradually come into use. Today, many people still hand-wash all of their kitchenware, but there is a significant amount of us who take for granted the luxury of having a machine that washes and dries our dishes for us. So, when did the dishwasher come about? Let’s take a look at the progression of one of our prized kitchen helpers.

Believe it or not, the first product to resemble what was to become the modern dishwasher was patented by one Joel Houghton in 1850. That’s right, before the Civil War, people were thinking about how to lighten the burden of household chores. While it was just a wooden machine with a hand-turned wheel that splashed water on dishes, it was a start in the right direction.

“If nobody else is going to invent a dishwashing machine, I’ll do it myself.”

So proclaimed Josephine Cochran in 1886. Engineering was in her blood, as her father John Fitch was the inventor of the steamboat. Cochran unveiled her invention at the 1893 World’s Fair, but it was only the hotels and restaurants that show interest in buying her idea. Cochran’s design had racks to hold plates, saucers and cups.

By today’s standards, her invention is of course primitive. But Cochran’s hand-operated mechanical dishwasher did an adequate job. The company she founded to manufacture her dishwashers went on to become KitchenAid.

Once indoor plumbing became more prevalent and could be used in conjunction with dishwashers in the 1920s, appliance makers Miele pushed the dishwasher further into the future.

“In 1929, we launched Europe’s first electric top-loading dishwasher ready for series production,” says Neil Pooley, Miele’s group product manager.

But the stock market crash brought on the Great Depression, which made selling a luxury item virtually impossible. In 1937, the dishwasher that most resembles what we know them to be now was invented by William Howard Livens. This machine had a front door for loading, a rotating sprayer and wire racks. In 1940, electric elements used for drying the dishes were incorporated into the design.

It would be several decades before the dishwasher became a practical item for most homes, due to their steep pricing. After Miele introduced the first automated dishwasher in 1960, the cost of a dishwasher was still out of reach for most people. For example, an RCA dishwasher in 1966 went for as much as $218. When considering inflation, that would be more than $1,500 in today’s money.

But like most inventions that created enough demand, the price of dishwashers gradually came down, and by the time the ’80s rolled around, it became one of the most popular kitchen appliances in America.

Glasgow Shopping, Top 10 Shops For Streetwear

You don’t realise how good the shopping is in Glasgow till you spend a day trekking its streets, if, you have come from anywhere outside of London, you will love what Glasgow has to offer, more shops than anywhere and loads of good streetwear stores, well 3, but still good.

I have decided to list my top 11 shops, the ones I’d visit when out shopping, mention my competition i hear you say, yes, I do say, the more people who realise Glasgow is the No1 shopping destination the better.

1. TK Maxx on Sauchiehall St (top end) is where you’ll find bargains if your lucky, if not you’ll find nothing of interest, I got a great pair of Brown Leather Air Max for £25 18 months ago, only now starting to fall apart, but the comfiest shoes ever. Also got a great case for when I’m on my travels, snazzy ‘lil thing for much cheapness.

2. Next on Bath street is the urban legend that is Fat Buddha, Vinyl Toys, Graffiti Supplies, Lifestyle and Clothing by brands like Carhartt, The Hundreds, Kikstyo, Recon, Penfield, Zoo York, Volcom, Nike, Dc’s, Reebok. Voted best shop in Glasgow by an independent panel of my family, but worth the visit, just to see the shop dog Maisie.

3. Goodlife is across the road from Fat Buddha and is uber-expensive but it is Glasgow’s only High end Streetwear Boutique after all, selling Original Fake & Alife, good mix of brands in such a small place, but the store has its following, coming from a far for its brand mix.

Not sure the exact story, but it looks like Goodlife has closed its doors.

4 On Buchanan st you’ll find this corporate whore that is Urban Outfitters, in sale time there are great bargains to be had, real mix of brands in here, and some of the home-wares are not to be sniffed at, worth a visit.

If you are American or visited one of these stores in America you will be surprised how poor the British version is compared to the American, different brand mix, terrible staff and no atmosphere.

5. Further down Buchanan st you will find Hugo Boss, I love this store, for years now i still like to visit it, great layout and some good product, wonderful suits and boy do they fit like they should. Glasgow’s first real designer name on Buchanan St, go visit.

I almost got the managers job in here many many moons ago, but it wasn’t to be, lovely shop still.

6. Just round the corner you’ll find Aspecto, this lads store, only place for Stussy, and good for Adidas, Carhartt, North Face & Camper, Y3, Evisu and the like. Great shopfit, looked great at the time, so worth a visit.

7. You want trainers, where else to go than Size on Union Street, big store with good range of apparel, the best store in Glasgow for footwear, unless the shoes are rare, then the staff get first shout on them. This is the place for footwear, the 2 Chris’s always have a smile for you.

8. Always a sucker for Department stores, and House of Frasers always hits the spot, the cookware dept rocks, Menswear has now relocated to the first floor and a ton of money was spent on it, now it is the BEST mens clothing area in Glasgow by a mile, the Paul Smith section is lovely and again the Paul Smith section is lovely, great wallets and saving up for the scarf just now. Frasers is worth an hour or so of your time, its just of Argyle St.

9. Footlocker, just at Argyle St is where your Jordan craving will be satisfied, good selection of nikes, esp Air Stabs, good range of clothing and a separate woman’s floor make this a destination not to be missed. Footlocker is always a must visit place for sneakerheads.

10. Focus are on Argyle St and Glasgows sole Nike SB stockist, other brands include Diamond, Supra, Krew, Cliche. Skateboards are Focus’s forte and they serve the Glasgow market well, they have a good reputation now and visit it just for an Obey t/shirt. Good staff and a friendly ambiene make this a worthy addition to my list.

11. Lastly you’ll walk round the corner from Focus and find Cruise on Ingram St, a legend in Glasgow and still doing what it does best, feeding brands to the masses, CP Company, Stone Island, Y3, BBC make a visit essential. Lovely Shopfit as well, grab a Paul Smith wallet while your there.

So that wraps up Glasgow for shopping, the best 11 shops, there are hundreds more not on the list, you have St Enoch Shopping Ctr, Buchanan Galleries Shopping Ctr in town, stretch further afield and you’ll hit Braehead Shopping Ctr and Silverburn Shopping Ctr.

The more you leave Glasgow, the more you appreciate it, so come eat, shop and be merry.

Poor posture — an epidemic in 2010?

We all seem to be spending a higher percentage of our days hunched over our computers. Whether we’re at work, at the local Starbucks, or at home, most of us spend hours a day at a computer. But it can also lead to less obvious side effects including decreased energy, poor organ function, abdominal discomfort, and scores of other problem.

Additionally, poor posture gives one the appearance of poor health, low self-esteem, and an overall lack of confidence.

Posture corrective braces, the miracle cure?

Traditional posture braces come in various sizes, materials and configurations. From thin, elastic, over-the-shoulder posture bras, to Velcro vests and back braces made of surgical tubing, they all attempt to do the same thing: pull one’s shoulders back to maintain an upright stance and straight, correct posture. The problem with most posture braces is that they actually do put the user into correct posture. So why would that be a problem?

The problem with traditional posture braces is that they do the work for you. The passive nature of having one’s shoulders pulled back serves to weaken the back muscles, which actually worsens one’s posture over time, thus defeating the very purpose of using a posture correction brace.

Most people who have tried traditional posture braces have experienced the discomfort, the chafing under the arms, and the difficulty of use most devices offer, but most don’t realize that in the process of trying to improve one’s posture, the user could actually be causing long-term atrophy of the muscles in the back that are required for good posture.

Not Today, But Every Day Is "Mother’s Day"

A woman is a daughter, sister, and wife but above all, she plays the role of being a Mother. A day would never be enough to let her know how special she is but there’s no harm in celebrating a day where we could all tell our mothers that we owe our life to them. Although we deny listening to her advice most of the time, we know that a mother knows best. From our first word to our first friend, our first teeth to the first fall, our moms have been the most integral part of the journey. A mother would know when her child is in pain and when they are hungry, and there can be no better cure than sleeping in her lap. She is the first teacher of our life and the only one who never punished us for the wrong deeds rather taught us the lesson, good or bad.

I rely on her not only during my needs but during all the turmoil of my life because there’s no better guide than her. A childhood of a person sows seeds such that we turn into adults and our moms play the most important role in shaping it into a beautiful garden. I can never be thankful enough to my mother for every little thing she has done for me but I can be sorry for all those times I haven’t valued her words. There are times where we consider ourselves to be an adult and we neglect the advice of our mother, but with every wrong decision I have taken in my life, I have realized the importance of her words. Dedicate every day of yours to your mother but on Mother’s day, let’s just make her feel more special because, with every step we take, she takes ten steps ahead of us.

The celebration began in the United Stated during the early 20th century. It was first eminent in the year 1908 at St. Andrew’s Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia, in the memory of Anna Jarvis’s Mother. This place consists of the International Mother’s Day shrine in the present day. Anna’s objective was to honor her mother and she continued with her work being an activist for the wounded soldiers of the civil war. She wanted to mark a day in the honor of all the mothers. She was successful in founding Mother’s Day but it was not considered as an official holiday as the US Congress had rejected the proposal. In recent times, most of the countries celebrate the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day.

With the modernization, the celebration of Mother’s Day has gained popularity to a great extent. In our busy schedule, we have very little time to spend with our family. Thus, we take these occasions as an opportunity to let them know that we care. A simple act of love and care is enough to make our moms feel special. A mother is the backbone of the family and she gives all her time and life to create a beautiful family but she never demands anything in return except our happiness. But a token of love on a special occasion is never a bad idea.

  • A heavy, stable housing unit or base that houses the processor’s motor. A food processor’s heavy base is designed to provide stability while the appliance is in operation. The base housing unit should remain steady and firm while the motor and spinning blades or discs are in play. The base also typically contains the appliance’s power cord and control buttons like on, off and pulse.
  • A shaft that extends up from the base unit and motor and which powers the blades and discs that fit on the shaft.
  • Various chopping and mixing blades and shredding and slicing discs that slide over the shaft.
  • A work bowl that fits onto the housing base unit and around the shaft. The work bowl, and thus the food processor size, usually range from 2 to about 13 cups of processed food.
  • A work bowl cover that fits on top of the work bowl and keeps the processed food within the food bowl.
  • A feed tube and pusher rod or assembly through which the food is introduced into the unit’s bowl, blades and discs.
  • Optional attachments which can include whisks or beaters.

2. How safely does it cook your food? As mentioned above when cooking with metal or nonstick pans you run the risk of the chemicals used to manufacture them seeping into your food. So what about the nutritional value of the food? Are you cooking away all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your food has to offer? When you touch a metal pan you burn your fingers right? Well the same thing happens to the foods you cook in these pots, food (meat, plants, legumes) are all made up of tissue just as we are made of living tissue. That being said if the pot is harsh enough to burn you it is harming the food in the same manner. This very same heat damages the nutritional cells within the food you cook diminishing the nutritional value.

Another factor that affects the loss of nutrition is steam, most conventional cookware do not lock in steam, some even provide a vent to let it escape. This is detrimental to your consumption of fully wholesome meals due to the fact that much of the nutrients in food evaporate in steam. Which brings us to our next question…

3. Does it lock steam naturally? As stated above most traditional pots and pans do not seal in steam but instead let it escape. Steam in essence is the juice or lifeblood of the food you are cooking that evaporates due to being exposed to high temperatures. Trapping this vapor will keep the nutrients in the food instead of letting it dissipate into the air. Keeping the juices in the food also keeps it moist and flavorful plus one more added bonus it makes the pot even easier to clean.

4. How was your pot made? How your cookware is manufactured is of great importance to you and the environment. Cookware made from metals such as steel, iron and aluminum are processed with chemicals such as that can leach out into your food. Companies often mine these materials and this causes great damage to the planet through deforestation, water pollution.

So the safest cookware should be able to cook without leaching any chemicals or toxins, and without damaging foods its nutritional cells. Lock steam inside and also be made without harming the environment.

Copper Cookware – Choosing the Right Copper Pans For Your Kitchen

Professional chefs and serious home cooks love copper cookware. Copper has the unique ability to conduct heat faster than any other metal that is normally used in cookware. Because the copper heats up so quickly, it moves the heat evenly throughout the pan, eliminating hot spots that can cause scorching and sticking.

Some cooks believe that having the right pans can improve the performance of their kitchen even more than buying a brand new range. Copper pots and pans respond quickly to any change in the temperature of the burner, far quicker than pans made of stainless steel or cast iron. This gives cooks much more control over the cooking process.

There are several types of pans that feature copper. The copper itself cannot come into contact with food, so there must be another metal on the inside of the pan.

Copper Plated Pans:

Some cookware is made with aluminum or stainless steel, and has been plated with a thin copper exterior. The bottom will usually have a thicker layer of copper, and the inner surface is usually stainless steel.

Solid Copper Pans:

Several European manufacturers make solid copper cookware lined with stainless steel; Falk Culinair from Belgium, Mauviel and de Buyer from France. Lara Copper cookware is hand-made in Australia. The Hammersmith Corporation is the last surviving maker of solid-copper cookware in the United States.

Solid copper cookware is much more expensive than plated or clad cookware, but the pots and pans made of solid copper respond much more quickly to changes in heat than any other pans. Professional chefs insist on solid copper, while a serious home cook may choose just one – perhaps a sauté pan or medium-sized saucepan – that is used most often.

Caring for Copper Cookware:

Copper pots and pans should always be hand-washed. Never put them in the dishwasher.

Unlike stainless steel and aluminum, copper will oxidize, or change color. To keep the copper shiny as new, a copper cleaning paste is recommended. The Mauviel Corporation makes a copper cleaner called Copperbrill, which works very well, but, like their pots and pans, it’s expensive. A more affordable choice is Twinkle Brass & Copper Cleaner and Wright’s Copper Cream, made by Weiman. All three of these fine cleaners are available through Amazon.com.

Polishing the copper is not just an esthetic requirement. The dark spots created by tarnish can create hot spots in the pans.

Makers of fine copper and stainless steel cookware suggest that the interior of the pans should be cleaned with a fine powder cleanser, such as Bar Keeper’s Friend. After using a powder, wash the pan again in warm soapy water and immediately dry the pan with a soft cloth.

Never use scouring powders, oven cleaners, or any cleaner that contains bleach. Also avoid using steel wool. Soft cloths and nylon scrubbing pads are best.

The stainless steel interior of copper cookware can be damaged by salt, which may cause small white dots or pits. These small pits are not attractive but they will not affect the performance of your pans. To avoid salt damage, always bring liquids to a boil before adding the salt so it dissolves immediately into the water.

Discoloration can also be caused by overheating, or by reheating a pan that has a food film that has not been completely washed off.

As you can see, good copper cookware has many advantages for the serious cook, but these pots and pans do require more care to keep them looking and working their best. For people who really love to cook, the extra care is worth it.

Cooking Roasts – Cooking Time For Prime Rib Roast

A Prime Rib Roast which is often referred to as a Standing Roast is the cut between the area of the chunk and the loin. It is taken from the rib primal which is very rare, expensive, tender, succulent and flavorful. The belief that the word prime is already the highest grade quality of beef as per United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards doesn’t necessarily mean it, it is just a label because it is expensive as compared to other cuts. The cut comprises the ribs from 6 to 12. A full prime rib roast contains 7 ribs enough to feed more than 14 people, a generous serving of 2 persons per rib. Having the best prime rib roast won’t guarantee that you’ll end up serving the perfect dish that can satisfy your palate. One most important factor in cooking this, is the time element. A required cooking time is one assurance for the best end-product.

To begin with, a reliable and an accurate meat thermometer is needed. Whether it is rare, medium-rare, or well-done an instant- read cooking or meat thermometer should be used to cook it properly. Internal temperature for rare starts at 120°F and going to 125-130°F for medium-rare. Here’s a guide to follow when cooking prime rib roast but remember to always check oven temperature as this affects greatly the baking time of the rib roast. Oven temperatures are not always correct so be sure to check it by placing an oven thermometer at the center of the rack and heat for 15 minutes at 350° F. If the temperature of the oven reads lower or higher than the oven setting after 15 minutes,then have it adjusted.

Additional cooking time is allowed when baking at a high altitude because there’s less oxygen and atmospheric pressure making cooking time longer and atmosphere drier. Food thermometer is the only way to check whether an internal temperature is safely reached.

Other time element that should be considered when cooking prime rib roast:

Always let the roast to come to room temperature when it is previously frozen. Completely thaw in the refrigerator and remove it from the refrigerator about 2 to 4 hours (depending on its size), before cooking to let it settle at room temperature. You may have set the oven to 375 degrees F as directed by the package instructions but have an actual temperature of much less than that. Is there a way around this problem? There certainly is! Accurate instant-read thermometers are easy to find and inexpensive. Many have probes that can be left inside the oven while it is in use. This will allow you to ensure the internal oven temperature is where it needs to be. This will take care of any issues regarding unpredictable heating or temperature.

Uneven heating is much more difficult to overcome. Many inexpensive toaster ovens cook food very unevenly, leaving some portions of the food burnt while others are raw or undercooked. This isn’t just a problem with frozen meals; it is problematic with anything you cook. The problem is just amplified when you start with a product that is frozen rather than room temperature or close to it. I would never attempt to cook a frozen meal in an appliance that has issues with uneven heating. I would also not want to use that appliance for any of my other cooking needs.

So is it safe to cook a frozen meal in a toaster oven? I would say the answer to that is “maybe.” You probably should not risk it unless you are absolutely sure the appliance you are using cooks things evenly and accurately. Use a thermometer to monitor your actual temperature and check the internal temperature of the food once it is done. Most packaged foods will tell you what the internal temperature of the food needs to be for that food to be safe. There are also temperature guidelines provided by most local health departments. Use those if you are unsure of what the target temperature of the finished product needs to be.
